Limp Bizkit Sues UMG for $200 Million
Limp Bizkit Sues UMG for $200 Million
Band Alleges Decades of Unpaid Royalties
Limp Bizkit has filed a massive $200 million lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG), accusing the label of withholding royalties for decades. The nu-metal band, led by frontman Fred Durst, submitted the lawsuit on October 8, 2024, in Los Angeles, claiming that UMG has failed to properly compensate them for their music.
The lawsuit asserts that despite selling over 40 million records, Limp Bizkit has not seen the royalties they are rightfully owed. According to Durst’s legal team, UMG's practices have left the band in a state where they "have not seen a dime" in royalties from their biggest hits, dating back to the late 1990s and early 2000s.
UMG's Fraudulent Practices?
Limp Bizkit's albums from 1997 to 2011 were released through UMG's sub-label Interscope Records. In the lawsuit, the band accuses UMG of operating a “fraudulent” policy designed to withhold artist royalties, even as the label portrays itself as a champion of artist rights.
The complaint highlights that UMG has claimed the band’s account remains “unrecouped,” meaning the royalties don’t exceed the advances Limp Bizkit received to record their albums. However, the lawsuit disputes this, alleging that the label concealed millions in earnings and never informed the band.
Unexplained Charges and Ongoing Issues
Upon contacting UMG, Limp Bizkit's team uncovered over a million dollars in unpaid royalties, dating back to their peak years. The band claims UMG intentionally kept this information hidden. The lawsuit also points out mysterious charges on the band’s financial statements, including a $199,676 overdraft.
While UMG eventually paid $1.03 million to Limp Bizkit and $2.3 million to Durst’s Flawless Records, the band insists that far more money is still owed. According to the suit, this situation could affect “hundreds” of other artists signed to UMG as well.
A Legacy Overshadowed by Legal Drama
Despite their legal battle, Limp Bizkit continues to tour and connect with fans. The band recently wrapped up a North American tour and has announced plans for a 2024 24-date tour. Limp Bizkit remains a major player in the nu-metal scene, though this lawsuit could reshape their legacy if they win the fight for their royalties.
Their case shines a spotlight on the longstanding issues many artists face in the music industry, where royalty disputes and accusations of unfair practices continue to surface.
This legal battle is sure to heat up as the court proceedings unfold. Fans will be keeping a close eye on what happens next, as it could reveal deeper issues within the music industry and how artists are compensated for their work.
